John Attanas was born in Manhattan and raised in Queens, New York. He is a proud graduate of the High School of Performing Arts (now the Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts). He holds B.F.A. and a M.A. degrees from New York University, a M.A. degree from Queens College, and is currently a student in the M.F.A. fiction program at the City
College of New York. His plays have been produced in New York and around the U.S. since 1989. His most recent production was Forgiveness, which was performed Off-Off Broadway in early 2020. His newest play Modern won the David Dortort Prize in Playwriting.

 

John is also a published novelist and biographer for young people. His novel Eddie and the Jets was published by Darby Creek Publishing (now an imprint of Lerner Books), was a JLG selection, and also a Scholastic Book Club selection. His middle grade novel Me and Too Loose won the City College Graduate Children’s Writing Award, and a selection of the novel was published in the City College journal Promethean. John has also recently returned to writing poetry, and his poems have been published in Steam Ticket, Promethean, and Theravensperch.org.
